The flu is a contagious disease caused by a virus that generally
affects 5 to 20 % of Americans. Over 200,000 individuals are
hospitalized and 36,000 die each year due to complications of the
flu. The deaths mainly occur in individuals who are at high
risk for complications due to lowered immunity including older people,
infants/young children, and individuals with diseases that depress
the immune system.
Even though the majority of the students, staff, and faculty at
Appalachian do not fit into these high risk categories, it is important
to remember that an epidemic of the flu on campus will greatly affect
student learning due to high absences in classes should the flu become
widespread on campus. So while Appalachian should not “panic,” we
certainly need to be diligent at following flu prevention guidelines
this year.
Due to the lack of available vaccine in the United States, it is important that everyone practice flu prevention techniques.
